TORONTO, ON September 16, 2025 – The Zoryan Institute is pleased to launch the first post of its blog, Scholar’s Corner, with a timely article authored by Professor William A. Schabas, Member of the Institute’s Academic Board, and one of the world’s foremost authorities on international human rights law.

Titled, “UN Commission Concludes Israel is Committing Genocide”, Prof. Schabas’ article comments on the “Legal analysis of the conduct of Israel in Gaza pursuant to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide,” published this morning by the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Press surrounds the Commission’s recent report, most notably its rejection by PM Netanyahu, who lashes out at ‘global campaign of lies’ as widespread criticism over Gaza mounts. Israel’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Daniel Meron, similarly called the report “scandalous” and “fake,” saying it had been authored by “Hamas proxies.”

In his article, Prof. Schabas highlights the legal and moral obligations of States, specifically Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, who have previously affirmed the credibility and authority of UN commissions in the Gambia v. Myanmar case. He writes:

“… The publication of this report provides them [States] with the opportunity to recalibrate their positions, to break with the Netanyahu-Axis, and to affirm a principled commitment to human rights including the right of all peoples to self-determination.”
