Scholar’s Corner by the Zoryan Institute Examines the Persecution of the Banyamulenge in the DRC

06 Nov 2025

The Zoryan Institute is pleased to release Scholar’s Corner’s newest feature article, “Neglected Atrocities: Banyamulenge in the Democratic Republic of Congo”, authored by Dr. Delphin R. Ntanyoma, Visiting Researcher at the University of Leeds, UK.

Dr. Ntanyoma’s piece continues Scholar’s Corner’s mission to offer accessible, research-based insights from leading scholars on global issues of human rights and genocide. The platform seeks to alert international audiences to emerging violations before they escalate, and to connect urgent human rights realities with scholarly communities, fostering informed action for justice and accountability.

This article also contributes to the emerging subfield of slow genocide studies, a concept that the Zoryan Institute has recently brought into focus through its programming. Most notably, the Institute explored this theme in its September panel on “Domicide: The Meaning of Home” with the Balsillie School of International Affairs, which examined the deliberate destruction of homes and communities as a form of cultural and existential erasure.

Dr. Ntanyoma’s article draws attention to minorities in countries whose belonging is violently denied, as observed not only with the example of the Banyamulenge in Eastern DRC, but Sudanese people in Darfur, Armenians in the Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabagh region in Azerbaijan, and Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, to name a few.
