Toronto, July 11, 2025 — The academic journal of the Zoryan Institute, Genocide Studies International (GSI) journal has recently partnered with the longstanding podcast known as New Books in Genocide Studies (NBGS). Hosted by GSI’s Book Review Editor, Dr. Kelly McFall of Newman University, this collaboration marks an exciting step in expanding the journal’s reach and relevance.

The NBGS podcast was launched in 2010 as part of the New Books Network and has well over 150 interviews with prominent scholars, authors, researchers, and writers in the field of genocide studies. The podcast provides scholars with the opportunity to share their research, analyses, and insights with a broad audience for the purpose of bridging the gap between academic research and non-specialists. For the Zoryan Institute and the GSI editorial team, the NBGS podcast represents a powerful educational tool that can be used to narrow the divide between academic research and public discourse.

“As a journal, GSI has always aimed to bring leading scholarship into dialogue with policy and practice,” says Dr. Kelly McFall. “With the NBGS podcast, we now have a way to bring those conversations directly to listeners—students, teachers, activists, and policymakers—who can carry this knowledge forward in their own work.”

This new platform arrives at a crucial moment. In a time when comprehensible genocide and human rights education is needed now more than ever before, GSI is embracing a new way to connect with the world: podcasting.

Megan Reid, the Deputy Executive Director of the International Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies (A Division of the Zoryan Institute), commented on the significance of this partnership in addressing present day human rights violations:

“In light of today’s global conflicts and human rights abuses, the Zoryan Institute is proud to offer an accessible way for disseminating knowledge and research that will support the GSI journal in fulfilling its mission. We would like to thank GSI Book Review Editor and host of the NBGS Podcast, Dr. Kelly McFall for this collaboration.”

Genocide Studies International (GSI) is owned and operated by the Zoryan Institute and is published twice a year by Canada’s leading academic publisher, the University of Toronto Press (UTP), which expressed its enthusiasm for the journal’s mission.

“As publisher, we recognize the urgent need for credible, scholarly voices in conversations about atrocity, accountability, and justice,” states Antonia Pop, the Vice President of the Publishing Division of UTP. “This new collaboration with the podcast offers a powerful way to bring the journal’s vital research to broader audiences—especially at a time when informed, accessible analysis is more essential than ever.”

Listeners can now stream the first episode of the GSI-NBGS partnership, featuring Dr. McFall in conversation with GSI Co-Editor Dr. Henry Theriault and ZI Deputy Executive Director, Megan Reid. The discussion introduces the Zoryan Institute’s mission and sets the stage for future episodes that will spotlight emerging research and leading voices in the field of genocide and human rights studies.
